A new scientific article - "Challenges for transboundary management of a European brown bear population" - has just been published which explores the potential impacts of the border security fence between Slovenia and Croatia on their shared brown bear population. The paper summarises data on the ongoing bear harvest from both populations and models its future development for scenarios where bears are free to move across the border and where each country has to manage its portion of the population in action. The analysis shows that adapting to a situation where the border fence prevents bear movement will require both countries to modify their management approaches. The article is open access and available in the journal Global Ecology and Conservation.
